Art @ i-Lab

During 2006 HAPPEN began creating opportunities for artists to develop their professional practice within the Bedford i-Lab. Bedford i-Lab is an exciting new innovation centre, aimed at meeting the accommodation needs of businesses from high tech, knowledge intensive and business support sectors, providing a flexible and dynamic environment in which innovative and ideas-based businesses can thrive. HAPPEN has encouraged Bedford i-Lab to make use of its empty spaces in the medium term to create benefits for existing, new and future tenants, and raise the i-Labís profile, through providing free studio space for artists. HAPPEN continues to put forward artists who are a good fit with the i-Labís ethos: energetic, ambitious, outward-looking and working with new technologies or media. These residencies are intended to bring the following benefits:

  • Develop i-Labís association with creativity
  • Raise i-Labís profile
  • Help attract new business

Artist 1 Paul Pibworth 2006/07

Our first resident artist was Paul Pibworth of Potton. Paul produced an artist-led publication, detailing the full range of creative outputs that were achieved during his time spent at i-Lab, and which can be made available upon written request. Click here to learn more about this residency.

ěPaul, through the HAPPEN project, has added meaning and new dimensions to the thinking process of our rapidly growing small business population both directly through his works and indirectly through his interaction with people. I have been delighted to support him and this projectî ń Shaun Armstrong, Centre Manager, Bedford i-Lab.

Artist 2 Full House Theatre 2008/09

Our second resident artists are Ben Miles and Harriet Hardie of Full House Theatre Company. Harriet and Ben joined i-Lab in April 2008 and have made it their headquarters. Full House Theatre Company creates dynamic musical theatre for family audiences in conventional and unconventional theatre spaces. In return for a studio workspace, Full House is likely to offer tenants Bite-sized Corporate Training, addressing issues for businesses such as:

  • Influencing and persuading
  • Assertiveness
  • Creative Problem Solving
